NeoRural Futures Summer School MONOGRAPH
Our Italian project partner HER has published a documented case history of the SpeculativeEdu NeoRural Futures Summer School from 2019.
Curated by Salvatore Iaconesi and Oriana Persico, the publication documents for students, professionals and organisations the approaches, methods, design and cultural strategies used to conceive the event: “We decided for a how-to style, accessible and ready to use. In this pandemic year, thinking about the future is a fundamental thing to do: we all need to imagine futures, right in the middle of our society. Now more than ever, the Speculative Design community can have a political role.”

- What are the possible, imaginable and preferable futures of rurality in global scenarios?
- How can Speculative Design, Design Fiction, Near Future Design and Critical Design approaches help people and organisations to discuss possible and preferable futures in times of disruption and global crisis – such as climate change or pandemics?
- What are the key elements to design and realise a meaningful, collaborative and engaging learning experience – involving people’s minds and bodies, and bridging your event to the city?
Held in Rome from 2-6 September 2019 at RUFA – Rome University of Fine Arts, the event enrolled 100 people from all around the world (Europe, USA, China, Palestine, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Turkey, India, Israel, South Africa) and 40 selected participants. In the five days, participants transformed their research into an exhibit open to the public, showcasing five speculative design scenarios and objects about rurality. The event ended with an international conference and a session of Cucina Titanica Partecipativa: an unprecedented collaborative food performance by Nino Galdieri and crew, direct from Salerno in the south of Italy.
